The History & Psychology of Wasting Money
Two short, entirely serious essays. Peer-reviewed by nobody.
A brief history of throwing money away
Humans have been throwing money away for as long as there has been money to throw. Roman emperors tossed coins from balconies to please crowds. Medieval nobles hurled silver at weddings for luck. Renaissance kings commissioned entire buildings just to demolish them the following season. The pattern is stubbornly consistent: the moment a civilization invents currency, it invents a spectacularly public way to lose it.
What has changed is the delivery mechanism. Fountains replaced balconies. Casinos replaced fountains. Cryptocurrency briefly replaced casinos. And now, at long last, the practice has been refined to its purest possible form — a single button and an open window. No middlemen. No pretence of a product. Just you, gravity, and the quiet dignity of a decision you cannot undo.
Why it feels weirdly good
Most of your spending is invisible. Rent evaporates into a landlord's inbox. Subscriptions drain quietly at 3 a.m. Groceries become garbage. The brain, understandably, learns that money simply disappears — and this generates a low background hum of anxiety that no productivity app has ever managed to fix.
Throwing money out a window inverts this. The loss is chosen, visible, loud, and finite. You know exactly where it went (out the window) and exactly why (you decided). Psychologists call this agency. Everyone else calls it relief. It turns out the cheapest form of therapy is, ironically, the expensive one.
None of the above should be construed as medical, financial, or structural advice regarding windows.

“In my professional opinion this website is the single greatest destroyer of value since my second marriage.”
